Gutter Guard Installation

Gutter guards cover the top of the gutter so leaves, twigs, pine needles and roof grit stay out while rainwater still gets in. The right guard depends on what falls on your roof, how steep it is and how much rain you get. Not every guard is maintenance-free, but a good system installed correctly means far less ladder work and far fewer overflowing gutters.

Professional labor typically adds about $2 to $6 per foot. National brand systems sold through in-home appointments are often priced far higher – one 2026 survey put several of them at roughly $40 to $62 per foot. Always ask what product is being installed and compare more than one quote.

Which guard for which trees?

• Pine needles and small seeds: micro-mesh – needles slip through coarse screens and brushes
• Oak, maple and other large leaves: micro-mesh, solid covers or reverse-curve hoods
• Heavy downpours: micro-mesh or covers rated for high rainfall, on properly sized gutters
• Snow and ice country: sturdy metal guards fastened under the shingles or to the front lip, not loose inserts

Guards on existing gutters or new gutters?

Guards can go on existing gutters if they are sound, well pitched and securely attached. If your gutters sag, leak or are more than about 20 years old, replacing them and adding guards in one visit usually costs less over time than guarding a failing system.
