Gutters in Capital Region: what local homeowners should know

Capital Region winters are long, snowy and icy. Gutters here have to carry snowmelt and survive ice buildup, so heavy-duty hidden hangers, correct pitch and sturdy materials matter more than in milder climates.

Victorian and older homes in Albany, Troy and Saratoga Springs often have half-round, box or copper gutters, while suburban towns have aging aluminum systems ready for seamless replacement. Guards installed before winter keep leaves from freezing inside the gutter.

Snow, ice and 41 inches of precipitation

Albany averages about 40.7 inches of precipitation and about 59 inches of snow a year under the National Weather Service’s 1991–2020 normals. January, February and December each average well over a foot of snow, and July is the wettest month for rain. The Helderbergs, the Adirondack foothills around Saratoga and the hills east of Troy get more snow than the Hudson Valley floor.

Irene and the region’s floods

In August 2011, Tropical Storm Irene produced floods of record at 13 river gauges across the Albany forecast area, according to the National Weather Service. The Schoharie Valley and eastern Catskills were devastated, and the Mohawk flooded Schenectady’s Stockade neighborhood. Tropical storm winds brought down trees and power lines across the region.

Historic homes in Albany, Troy and Saratoga

Albany’s Center Square, Hudson/Park and Mansion neighborhoods, Troy’s brownstones and row houses, Schenectady’s Stockade and Saratoga Springs’ Victorians include some of the oldest housing in the country. Ice dams

Older homes with steep roofs and limited attic insulation get ice dams in cold snaps. Ice backs water under shingles and pulls gutters off the fascia. Trees and suburbs

Maples, oaks and pines shade the suburbs of Colonie, Guilderland, Bethlehem, Niskayuna, Clifton Park and Saratoga County. Leaves come down in October and November, right before snow, and frozen, leaf-packed gutters cannot drain. Timing

Late summer and early fall are the best time for gutter replacement in the Capital Region, before leaves drop and well before snow. Spring is when winter damage appears. In historic districts, allow time for any required review. Book early; installers fill up quickly in both seasons.

New York contractor rules

New York State does not license home improvement contractors; some cities and counties have their own rules. New York’s General Business Law requires written home improvement contracts with the start and completion dates, a description of the work and the total price, and gives consumers the right to cancel within three business days. Ask for proof of insurance and, on pre-1978 homes, EPA lead-safe certification.
