Gutters in Jacksonville: what local homeowners should know

Jacksonville combines Florida rainfall with a lot of tree cover. Live oaks, laurel oaks and pines line older neighborhoods like Riverside, Avondale and San Marco, and their leaves and needles clog gutters year-round. Micro-mesh guards are a common request for that reason.

Nor’easters and tropical storms bring wind-driven rain to the First Coast, so securely fastened, correctly pitched seamless gutters matter. Newer communities in St. Johns and Clay Counties often add full gutter systems after move-in.

53 inches of rain, most of it in summer

Jacksonville averages about 53.4 inches of rain a year under NOAA’s 1991–2020 normals. Most of it falls from June through September in afternoon thunderstorms that can drop an inch or two in under an hour, and tropical systems add multi-day soakers. Heavy, short bursts are the real test for gutters: a 5-inch gutter with 2x3-inch downspouts on a large roof can overflow within minutes in a typical summer storm.

Hurricanes and the St. Johns River

Jacksonville is exposed to storms from the Atlantic and from the Gulf. During Hurricane Irma in September 2017, storm surge pushed up the St. Johns River while heavy rain drained into it, and the river at downtown Jacksonville rose above the record set during Hurricane Dora in 1964, flooding San Marco, Riverside and low-lying neighborhoods along the river and its tributaries.

Gutters cannot stop surge or river flooding. What they can do is keep roof water from adding to the problem at your house, and stay on the house in high winds. Beaches, salt air and the Intracoastal

From Jacksonville Beach, Neptune Beach and Atlantic Beach to Ponte Vedra, Fernandina Beach and St. Augustine, homes near the ocean and the Intracoastal Waterway face salt air that corrodes thin gutters and plain steel fasteners. Live oaks, pines and Spanish moss

Jacksonville has one of the largest urban tree canopies in Florida, with live oaks, laurel oaks, magnolias and pines shading neighborhoods such as Avondale, Riverside, San Jose and Mandarin. Live oaks drop leaves heavily in spring rather than fall, pines drop needles year-round, and Spanish moss and oak catkins end up in gutters. Sandy soil, slabs and termites

Most Jacksonville homes are built on slabs over sandy soil. Sand drains quickly but erodes easily, so a downspout that discharges onto bare ground can dig a trench along the slab in a single storm. Warm, damp soil next to the foundation also favors subterranean termites, which are active across Florida. Florida licensing and insurance

Florida regulates construction contractors through the Department of Business and Professional Regulation (DBPR), and Duval, St. Johns, Clay and Nassau Counties and their cities add local licensing and permit rules. Ask the installer for their license number and check it on the DBPR’s online license search, and ask for proof of liability and workers’ compensation insurance.
