Gutters in Providence: what local homeowners should know

Rhode Island’s triple-deckers, colonials and shingle-style coastal homes often have old gutters that have been patched for years. Seamless replacement and guards are common projects from Providence to South County.

Coastal storms, salt air and New England winters are hard on gutters. Heavier-gauge materials, corrosion-resistant fasteners and solid hangers help systems last near the water.

Rain, nor’easters and the 2010 floods

Providence averages about 45.5 inches of precipitation and about 36 inches of snow a year under the 1991–2020 normals. Rain is spread across the year, with nor’easters in winter, spring storms and tropical systems in late summer and fall.

Rhode Islanders remember March 2010, when three storms in a month brought more than 15 inches of rain to Providence, the wettest month on record there, and sent the Pawtuxet River to a record crest above 20 feet. Basements flooded across the state. Triple-deckers and old houses

Providence has one of the largest concentrations of 19th-century housing in the country: the Federal and Greek Revival homes of College Hill and Fox Point, Victorian houses on the West Side and Elmwood, and the triple-deckers of Federal Hill, Olneyville and Mount Pleasant. In the city’s local historic districts, visible exterior changes may need approval from the historic district commission; ask before changing a visible gutter style.

Salt air on Narragansett Bay

Homes along Narragansett Bay and the coast, from East Providence and Warwick to Bristol, Barrington, Newport and Narragansett, face salt air that corrodes thin gutters and plain steel fasteners. Snow, ice and hurricanes

Providence gets less snow than inland New England, but nor’easters bring heavy, wet snow and ice, and older homes with limited attic insulation get ice dams. Hurricanes have hit Rhode Island hard in the past, and tropical storms still bring wind and rain. Lead-safe work

Most Providence homes were built before 1978. The U.S. EPA requires paid contractors who disturb more than 20 square feet of exterior paint on these homes to be lead-safe certified, and Rhode Island has its own lead hazard rules for rental housing. Gutter and fascia work on older homes often crosses that line, so ask about certification.

Tight lots and neighbors

Many Providence houses sit close together on narrow lots, with driveways and walkways between them. Downspouts often discharge into those narrow side yards, where water has little room to spread and can flow toward a neighbor’s foundation. Extensions that carry water to the front or back of the lot, rain barrels and small rain gardens help. Where city rules allow connections to storm drains, ask about permits. Keep in mind that directing water onto a neighbor’s property can create disputes.

Rhode Island contractor registration

Rhode Island requires anyone in the business of residential construction, alteration or repair to register with the Contractors’ Registration and Licensing Board. Registration requires a pre-registration course and liability insurance of at least $500,000, and contractors with employees must carry workers’ compensation. Check the registration on the board’s website before signing, and get a written contract. The board also handles consumer complaints against registered contractors.
