Gutters in Omaha & Lincoln: what local homeowners should know

Eastern Nebraska is hail country. Hail and wind regularly damage roofs and gutters in Omaha and Lincoln, and replacing gutters together with the roof is a common project after storm season.

Winters bring snow and ice, and summers bring heavy thunderstorms. Seamless gutters with hidden hangers and properly sized downspouts protect siding and basements.

Storms, hail and a continental climate

Omaha averages about 32 inches of precipitation and about 27 inches of snow a year under NOAA’s 1991–2020 normals at Eppley Airfield. Much of the rain comes in spring and summer thunderstorms that bring heavy downpours, large hail and strong winds. Winters bring snow, ice and hard freezes. Short, intense bursts of rain are what overwhelm gutters here, and hail is what damages them.

In March 2019, record snowmelt and rain caused flooding at record levels across Nebraska; about a third of Offutt Air Force Base south of Omaha was under water, and hundreds of homes were damaged statewide. Hail damage

Nebraska sits in the heart of hail country. Hail dents aluminum gutters and downspouts, crushes elbows and knocks guards loose, and it strips granules from shingles that then collect in gutters. After a storm, check gutters and downspouts along with the roof and document damage with photos. Heavier-gauge aluminum resists dents better than thin material. Wind and attachment

Straight-line winds from severe thunderstorms are common across eastern Nebraska, and derechos occasionally sweep across the region. Loess hills and clay soils

Omaha is built on the loess hills along the Missouri River, with wind-blown silt that erodes easily when concentrated water runs over it, and clay-rich soils in many neighborhoods that swell and shrink. Timing

Spring is storm season and a busy time for installers in eastern Nebraska; after a big hailstorm, schedules fill for weeks. Nebraska contractor registration

Nebraska’s Contractor Registration Act requires contractors and subcontractors doing construction work in the state to register with the Nebraska Department of Labor, with exemptions such as people earning less than $5,000 a year from such work. Registration is not a license and does not guarantee quality, but it is a basic check. Contractors with employees must provide proof of workers’ compensation. Verify registration before you sign, and after hailstorms be cautious with out-of-state crews and door-to-door offers. Omaha and Lincoln may require permits for some exterior work.
